Value of bitcoin rises to USD 17,000 a piece

What is Bitcoin? That is a question that many Kenyans are asking today given how fast its value has risen. It is a digital currency whose value was 1.75 million Shillings this morning, or 17,000 U.S. Dollars, but has since dropped to 1.49 million shillings. A lot of people are either rushing to invest in them or wondering if they should, but some analysts are calling it a get rich quick scheme whose bubble is likely to burst soon.

120,000 Bitcoins Stolen in Bitfinex Hack

Bitcoin’s price crashed today as Bitfinex dramatically announced a “security breach” that led to the theft of roughly 120,000 bitcoins. The biggest USD bitcoin exchange further announced a shutting down of its website and trading in ominous signs reminiscent of MT Gox.

The theft of 119,756 bitcoins has now been conclusively confirmed, valued close to $65 million at press time. The evidence provided is days destroyed. Around mid-day today, there was a dramatic dip
